Pathways: Starting Points

I told all those other stories to tell this one.

Wait, let me back up a little bit.

This is story #26 of my continual project. I’m exactly at the midway point in my goal to put up 52 weeks of fiction. Ok, so twice I missed weeks. The first was because I was on a holiday vacation with the family. The second was last week, where a variety of things conspired to keep me from posting something. One of the reasons was that I have begun work on a multipart story and spent last week plotting it out.

This week marks the beginning of what I hope will be my own “Black Mountain”, a continual narrative that will take place over several weeks. In it, I aim to revisit a lot of what I’ve already written in some way or another. I have been planning something like this for quite a while. Many of the most recent stories have been building up toward what I will do in this one, at least in some way or another.

This section sets up everything that is to come and hopefully reintroduces you to a few characters you haven’t seen in a while. Each of them will play their part in what is to come.

Damned

This one is a fairly short one. It went through a couple of evolutions in my mind before I settled on what occurs here. Originally, it was going to be a longer piece, but I felt like too many of the events in it were contrived, so it got chopped down quite a bit into what it currently is. Despite that, I think it’s a good piece. Enjoy.

Balance

I almost didn’t write anything this week. Work has been hell in a handbasket and between an ultimately failed attempt to disassemble and package a bicycle for shipping and a cat deciding my hand looked like food, my typing has been mildly slowed by pain. Plus, I had absolutely no ideas for what to write. So I was going to say “to hell with it” and just post an apology for no story this week and start thinking about something to write.

Inspiration is a funny thing. A suddenly thought can hit you and from that seed of thought sprouts a tree. Then more trees sprout and before long you have a forest. And this is how it happened this week. I had a brief idea, then thought of a few different scenes the idea might entail, and then I realized I had enough for a story.

And here it is, for you all to enjoy.
