Upgraded

First off, a little background on the process here. The writing group I used to be a part of occasionally did something called “a perfect page of prose.” Essentially, this was writing one page or less and having it be a complete story. The exercise was supposed to get us to just distill a story to its essential parts and make as much use of the space as we could. I’ve always wanted to do one for EVE, but couldn’t think of an appropriate topic.

And, for the longest time, I have wanted to do a story about the effects of getting implants on a capsuleer. But as I wrote, I always found it was getting to be boring pretty quickly, and the story would only be a third of the way done. Essentially, everything was just a repeat of what I had written two pages ago. So I kept abandoning the stories.

Well, this week, I finally put two and two together. In Upgraded, we see the immediate effects of a capsuleer getting a new head full of attribute implants. Willpower, Intelligence, Memory, Perception, and Charisma. All these basic aspects of the brain can be upgraded with some simple (albeit expensive) implants in EVE. We rarely think about what this would do to our characters. Upgraded shows just a small hint of what can actually be.

That’s all I’ll say about this piece, because I don’t really want to ruin too much of the surprises. Next week might be another one of this series… Or it might be something different. I haven’t decided yet.

Mr. Vainjoy’s Children

The Jove are the enigmas of the EVE universe. They are the unknown, the mystery. They are distant and hover at the periphery of the galaxy like gods in the dark. But they are not gods. They are humans. And this story shows just how human some of them can be.

Politics as usual

The Gallente Federation is an interesting place. In some senses, it’s the place most like what modern day people are used to. A democratic melting pot that focuses on liberty and freedom. But it’s taken to the extreme. It’s the hedonistic empire that has it so good none of the people care unless someone famous is being dragged through the mud. But when elections roll around, someone has to get the people to care. And here we learn about Fitan Firac and his assistant, Kallen Cellia, who make it their mission to get people to care, no matter how dirty they have to make it.
