They say that money runs the world, and so it’s not surprising that Home Base plays a giant role in world economics as well in its nefarious deeds. Barium runs (or ran, at least) Home Base’s Commerce and Economy division, and the elements who work for him are involved in controlling big businesses and banks, as well as performing industrial sabotage, manipulating the stock market, and a variety of other deeds. Not much more is known about Barium and his variety of activities, and he wouldn’t survive as long as the meeting that first introduced him. Element 1 revealed that a rogue Element had betrayed Home Base, and Uranium was sent in to execute Barium. In actuality, Barium was innocent, but a clerical error was made by Chromium, resulting in the embarrassing mix-up. Chromium and his boss, Lithium, made sure to cover up the mistake and never mention it again to save their own asses. You can’t feel too bad for him though, he was an evil criminal.

A replacement for Barium is obviously in the works.

First Appearance: He’s first seen at the far end of the desk in the May 17, 2007 issue (which also introduces most of the rest of the S-block), and first speaks two issues later.

Misc: Barium’s original mask was going to be a blank faceplate, but I was never satisfied with my designs and went with the diving helmet instead. Maybe if the new Barium is ever featured, I’ll return to the original concept.
